Challenge
Climate change continues to impose a significant threat to our world. Greenhouse gas emissions are leading to dramatic changes in the Earth’s climate.
In Australia, agriculture directly contributes almost 17 percent of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions making it a significant contributor behind the energy, mining and transport sectors.
Up to 77 percent of all agricultural emissions are from methane produced by livestock. Nitrous oxide from crop residue burning and fertiliser use accounts for a further 19 percent of overall agricultural emissions and carbon dioxide from lime and urea use makes up the remaining four percent.
While many land managers are already taking steps to reduce emissions, addressing this challenge requires a coordinated, and outcome-focused approach that spans the entire agricultural supply chain.
Zero Net Emissions Agriculture CRC addresses this challenge by investing in industry-led research projects, that test a diverse range of emissions reduction technologies at scale, on Australian farms. Reducing emissions from Australian agriculture will take a coordinated, multi-solution approach.
